The main focus of this thesis, created in collaboration with Laura Pison, is centered around the functioning and the management of different Italian industrial districts. We conducted an in-depth analysis of the glass-making district of Murano, in order to identify the design opportunities that can revitalize the productive capacity of the Venetian island. The outlined scenario includes the relocation of companies depending on their competencies to one particular common place where manufacturing, distribution and communication are put together. This project aims to examine the manufacturing process in detail, including its technical and design aspects, considering a new management system of the industrial district as the general point in the analysis of the glass-making district of Murano. Moreover, this project has two main purposes: the first is to support the professional partnership among the plants of the district; the second is to incentivize the dialogue between designers and glass blowers, who normally have very distinct mindsets. The project suggests a list of services, which can support all the roles of the new industrial district, enlarging and improving their knowledge but also enhancing the Murano glass culture. The thesis is not a completed project but a glimpse of a new attitude and design approach; it offers a limited series of stackable molds that, once combined, pre-form up to a hundred and sixty-two different shapes. The novelty of this system is the possibility of splitting a traditional mould in two different components: the base of the object which is made up of a fixed single-piece entity and another element which is collapsible and interchangeable and defines the height of the second half of the artifact’s body. In this way, beginning from three basic shapes ( cone, cylinder and sphere) you can actually obain six different moulds that, if arranged and combined, can form various shapes utilizing all the possible glass-blowing techniques.
Furthermore, there is the possibility of increasing the number of variants predisposing a joint-system (i.e., male - female) on the base of the single-piece entity. This enables the creation of a wide variety of items distinguished by various working techniques that when combined together result in a highly complex end-product produced through various glass-working techniques.
